While the daylight hours shorten and the weather tends towards chilly gloom, the town of Sidney comes alive with events and experiences that will transition you through the seasonal change into the excitement of December!
Although you can still kayak, hike, bike, walk and sail year round here, you might not be so keen to head out into the rain and wind. Why not cozy up with some indoor entertainment instead? Let’s take a look at what’s coming up this month at various venues around town.
Celebrate Canada Music Week with Victoria’s High Notes Flute Choir Flute Spectacular at 2 PM on November 24th at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church. Enjoy all new music by local composers, including a piece that will debut at the event.
For laughs, catch the Hook, Line & Sinker stand up comedy show, presented by Ratfish Comedy on November 22nd at McTavish Academy of Art. You can also belly laugh that same night at the Mary Winspear Centre, where This Hour Has 22 Minutes star Shaun Majumder will perform his HATE Tour show.
In addition to live comedy, the Mary Winspear Centre has a full calendar of events booked this month–everything from Roy Orbison, Billy Joel and Elton John tributes to performances by Tyler Shaw and classic Christmas country hits by the Louisiana Hayride Show.
The last weekend in November is a favourite time for families. Enjoy Breakfast With Santa at the Winspear on November 30th, then hop on a horse drawn carriage for a delightful spin around town–a charming activity you can enjoy right up until Christmas. In the afternoon, take the entire family to a special one hour performance of the The Storybook Nutcracker by the magical Ballet Étoile, who will present 2 PM matinees on November 30th and December 1st.
The popular Peninsula Singers also present their annual sell-out Christmas show at the Winspear, this year entitled Christmas Magic, with four performances over the weekend of December 6th, 7th and 8th. Be sure to visit the events calendar at www.marywinspear.ca for tickets and information about this and other shows throughout the season.
I don’t know about you, but November is my favourite month to indulge in the experience of shopping in Sidney. After Remembrance Day, holiday decorations sparkle up the town everywhere you look. The window displays in the boutiques along Beacon Avenue are worth an afternoon stroll, hot drink in hand. If you spot a favourite display, be sure to cast your vote in the Sidney Tour of Lights contest, by clicking here!
You won’t want to miss the Kick Off to Christmas event on November 23rd, where our merchants swing their doors open wide from 4 PM to 8 PM to celebrate the start of the holiday season. Santa will be there, plus a photo booth, free carriage rides, bites to eat and a Winter Wonderland in the Garden Court featuring Farmer’s Daughter Fromagerie.
There are also holiday fairs, including the Saanich Peninsula Hospital Auxiliary Christmas Bazaar & Craft Fair on November 16th at the Winspear, followed by the Christmas Vintage, Retro & Collectible Show/Sale the next day. By the time the Sidney Sparkles Christmas Parade and Sail Past arrives on December 1st–your holiday spirit will be in full swing, and you just might have your shopping done!
When you’re feeling as grey as the weather, let the atmosphere in Sidney infuse a little jolly spirit into your soul. For an events calendar and full description of all there is to do and see this month, be sure to click here!
